He routinely told his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He did not allow the detrimental comments from others annihilate his dream of becoming one of the greatest poker competitors in the world.
Phil started playing seriously after getting a false ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his abilities at the casinos of Atlantic City. The beginning few years for Phil were a learning period and coming away with a win wasn’t a regular thing at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 WSOP where he made two final tables and won his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the last table he defeated a number of the well known professionals which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil made a decision to take his skills to the next level and moved out west to Sin City. He continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Ivey credits his success to hard work and an undying passion for poker. Phil states that he’s learning every day and is incredibly abashed about his success. He admits to making mistakes in each session of poker and constantly aspires to get better.
Although Ivey has won some large tournaments, he prefers winning money games on a regular basis.
